This app has been conceived by an old student of Vipassana meditation in Sayagyi U Ba Khins tradition, as taught by S.N. Goenka. Its aim is to help meditators of this tradition in organising their daily sittings.

However, feel free anyone to use it for your own meditation practice, and be happy!

This application will help you to track meditation time in the simplest way. Select the length of time you want to meditate and tap the silhouette. The app starts to count down. When the time ends, youll hear a Burmese gong ringing. There is an option to have a gong warning you 5mn before the end, so you can practice Metta Bhavana.

Tip: turn the app off while meditating, it works on the background very well. If you dont have iOS 4.x installed, then put the device face down while meditating, it will save battery life.

Vipassana , which means to see things as they really are, is one of Indias most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gotama the historical Buddha, more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills.

• single gong only – to not interupt those who wants to continue sitting after ending gong
• be happy screen after meditation end
• have you already tried to shake a device to check sound level or gong?

Pros and cons of Vipassana app for iPhone and iPad

Vipassana app good for

Good daily tool for Vipassana Meditators! Keep u all growing in Dhamma.
Good simple timer. Its good time for an update to iOS7 and an iPad version.

Some bad moments

Ive been using this for 6 months now and love it. BUT all of a sudden, the gong is not ringing when time is up. The app just stopped gonging. Ive tried resetting my ipod as well as redownloading the app. No luck. Im frustrated as I used this for my meditation. I hope this gets fixed. It was great until now.
A simple timer, what more do you need. Works as it should. Cheers, Tim
I was sure I was going to find something under Vipassana in the app store! Great ui. Is it hard to add statistics, so we can be more precise when the assistant teachers ask us how much we have been sitting? Do you need help? :-)
Its the way it should be. Just SIMPLE. If you guys want some enhancement, please add silent (vibration) option and some songs, which is played during the courses. Not sure about last. Thanks.
I love the core functionality of the app. Its designed well, and I like the addition of the metta timer. But the fact that the timer does not go off if your phone is in silent mode is a no go. I need my phone on silent when I meditate so Im not interrupted by calls and emails, and even if I do take it off of silent to use this app, I inevitably forget to put it on silent sometimes. If they fix that flaw, I may start using it again. Until then, it is a show stopper problem.
This App is so simple but all you need. I use either this or Goenkas audio recordings to do my daily sittings. A tip to not be disturbed by phone calls: I put my phone on Airplane Mode but not on silent mode. So the gong sounds after an hour but no other distractions. Be happy, be equanimous.
